A practical guide to visiting Miami around an event, covering where to base yourself, how to get around using free trolleys and the Metromover, what parking really costs at each major venue, and how to build a weekend that does not fall apart in traffic.
Most Miami trip advice starts with the beach. That is fine if lying down is the plan, but if you came for a concert, a game, a festival or a haunted house, the beach is not where you should start. The venue is.
Miami-area venues are spread across Miami Beach, downtown and Brickell, Coral Gables, Miami Gardens and Broward County. A Heat game and a Dolphins game need different arrival plans, so choose where to stay around the venue and check the event-specific transport options below.
Here is how we would plan it.
Where should you stay in Miami?
Start with the venue, then work backward.
Going to a concert, a Heat game or anything downtown. Stay in Brickell or downtown. This is the one part of Miami where you can genuinely leave the car behind, because the Metromover runs free through 21 stations across Brickell, downtown and Omni, and it stops at Kaseya Center. Restaurants are walkable. You will not think about parking once.
Going to South Beach for nightlife, Art Deco or a Fillmore show. Stay on South Beach and skip the rental car entirely. The free Miami Beach trolley covers the island on four routes, the South Beach Loop, Middle Beach Loop, Collins Express and North Beach Loop, running 8 AM to 11 PM daily at roughly 20-minute intervals.
Going to a Dolphins or Hurricanes game at Hard Rock Stadium. Compare a Miami Gardens-area stay with downtown or Aventura, then plan the final leg to the stadium. The venue describes Hard Rock Stadium Connect trains to Brightline Aventura with a complimentary shuttle; look for the specific Stadium Connect service when booking and confirm that it operates for your event.
Going to a Panthers game at Amerant Bank Arena. That is Sunrise, in Broward County, about an hour from South Beach in traffic. If hockey is the main event, stay in Fort Lauderdale instead of Miami.
Doing a bit of everything. Brickell or downtown is the best compromise. You get the free Metromover, reasonable drive times in most directions, and a Brightline station for trips up the coast.
How do you get around Miami without a car?
Better than the city's reputation suggests, as long as you stay in the right corridor.
Metromover is free. No ticket, no tap, just walk on. It runs 5:30 AM to 10 PM seven days a week across three loops, Omni, Inner and Brickell, and reaches Kaseya Center, Bayside Marketplace and Miami Dade College. For a downtown event night this is the single best thing in Miami transit.
Metrorail costs 2.25 dollars a ride. Flat fare, any distance, either line, and transfers to Metromover are free. It connects Miami International Airport to downtown and south toward Dadeland, which covers a useful slice of the county but not the beach.
The Miami Beach trolley is free. So is the separate City of Miami trolley, though that one does not cross to Miami Beach. Two different systems, same price of nothing.
Brightline handles the coast. It links MiamiCentral, Aventura, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and West Palm Beach. Check current Brightline offers and fares for your travel date rather than budgeting around an older promotion. Review the booking deadline, eligible trains and travel window for any offer, and arrange the final connection to your venue.
Rideshare fills the gaps. Realistically you will use it for the beach-to-downtown hop and for anything in Miami Gardens. Budget for surge pricing when a game or concert lets out, because thousands of people request cars in the same three minutes.
What does parking cost at Miami venues?
If you are driving, this is the number that surprises people.
Kaseya Center, downtown for Heat games and concerts. Check the venue's current parking and visitor information for your specific event and compare the complete parking cost before booking. Do not treat a previous event's garage price as a current quote.
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens for Dolphins and Hurricanes games. Choose your specific event on the official parking and transportation page and arrange parking or the relevant transport service in advance. Lot availability, entry times and prices can vary by event.
Amerant Bank Arena, Sunrise for Panthers games. Lots open two hours before puck drop and remain open one hour after the game, with no re-entry; compare the current prepaid option instead of relying on an old gate price (Panthers parking information).
Jungle Island, for The Horrorland. Check the attraction's current arrival instructions for parking arrangements and charges before choosing your night. Do not assume parking is included in admission.
Tropical Park, for House of Horror Haunted Carnival. Free, included with admission, which quietly makes it the cheapest big night out on this list.
Treat parking prices as event-specific rather than fixed venue prices. Review the current parking product, entry gate and refund terms before purchasing.
What to bring to a Miami event
A clear bag. Hard Rock Stadium requires clear bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches plus a small clutch, and charges 12 to 20 dollars to check anything else. Kaseya Center caps bags at roughly 10 by 6 by 2 inches and rents lockers from 10 dollars near Gate 7.
Your phone, charged. Most major Miami venues are mobile ticket only, and a dead battery is a real problem at the gate.
A card, not cash. Kaseya Center is fully cashless. So are most of the stadiums.
Something for the weather. Check the forecast and your organizer's weather policy before leaving. Do not assume every outdoor event operates through storms or resumes after a fixed delay.
Layers for indoors. Miami arenas are aggressively air conditioned. A warm outdoor evening and the inside of Kaseya Center can feel very different.
Common Miami trip mistakes
Underestimating the drive. South Beach to Hard Rock Stadium is about 30 miles. On a Sunday with 65,000 other people heading the same way, that is not a 35-minute trip.
Renting a car for a South Beach-only trip. You will pay for the car and then pay again to park it at the hotel. The trolley is free.
Assuming the beach is the whole city. Wynwood murals, Little Havana on Calle Ocho, Coconut Grove, the Design District and Coral Gables are all distinct and all worth an afternoon.
Booking a game without checking the schedule. The Dolphins have eight home dates and a bye week. Teams travel. Confirm the game is actually in town before you book the flight.
Leaving parking until arrival. Check your event's advance-parking requirements and availability before traveling. A ticket to the event does not necessarily include a parking space.
Build the weekend, then fill it in
The way we would do it: pick the one event you actually care about, book that first, base yourself near it, then fill the rest of the weekend with things within a short trip.
Start with everything happening this weekend, then browse by what you are in the mood for. Concerts for the Fillmore and Hard Rock Live calendars. Sports for Heat, Dolphins, Hurricanes, Panthers and Inter Miami. Attractions and family activities for daytime. Food and drink for dinner plans, and seasonal for whatever the calendar is doing right now.
