Miami has a reputation as an expensive city, and for hotels and dinner that is fair. For the daytime, it is mostly wrong.
Free museum admission, garden visits, beach walks and downtown transit can help keep a Miami outing affordable. Start with the options below, then check opening days and any reservation requirements.
What follows is what we could confirm on official sources, along with an honest section on the things other guides list as free that will still cost you money.
What is actually free in Miami?
The Institute of Contemporary Art in the Design District. Admission is free, with galleries normally open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. Advance tickets are strongly recommended because entry is capacity-limited; groups larger than nine need a tour reservation, and holiday closures apply.
Miami Beach Botanical Garden. General admission is free at 2000 Convention Center Drive. The main hours block lists Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but another section lists Tuesday through Friday and notes major-holiday closures; confirm a weekend or holiday visit directly. Wheelchairs are available at no charge subject to the garden's checkout requirements.
The beaches. Every public beach in Miami-Dade is free to walk onto. South Beach from 1st to 23rd Street, Lummus Park, the boardwalk, all of it.
Metromover. The downtown people mover costs nothing, no ticket and no tap. It runs 5:30 AM to 10 PM daily across three loops through Brickell, downtown and Omni, 21 stations, including a stop at Kaseya Center. The Miami Beach trolley and the separate City of Miami trolley are also free.
Self-guided art and architecture walks. The Art Deco District along Ocean Drive, Collins and Washington is a free walk, and Greater Miami's tourism board publishes self-guided routes plus an Experience Miami Beach app for Apple and Android. The Wynwood Art District walk is the same idea, and the murals on the surrounding streets cost nothing to look at.
Which Miami museums have free days?
Pérez Art Museum Miami runs Free Second Saturdays. Admission is free all day on the second Saturday of each month, with art-making from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Check the calendar for the specific program before you go.
Jazz at MOCA in North Miami is free, held on the last Friday of the month.
Frost Science runs free community outreach and a free Family Fun Festival, which drew over 4,000 people in early 2026. General admission is not free, and some free programming there is described as free with paid admission, so read the specific event before you plan around it.
Museum free days do move. Check the museum's own calendar in the week you are going rather than trusting a roundup from last year.
Free things to do with kids in Miami
The beach first, because it is free and it works on every age.
Miami Beach Botanical Garden is small enough for short attention spans and costs nothing.
PAMM Free Second Saturdays is built for families specifically, with hands-on art-making for children and adults together.
Metromover as an activity, not just transport. It is elevated, it is automated, it has big windows, and small children treat it as a ride. Loop it for free and see downtown from above.
Playgrounds and public parks across the county are free to enter, though some county and state parks charge per vehicle to drive in.

Things other guides call free that are not
This is the part we wish someone had told us.
Bayfront Park yoga. Widely listed as free yoga by the bay. The park's own event page says classes are donation-based with a suggested donation of 15 dollars. Bring a mat, water and a towel, and bring the donation. Reports also disagree on which days it runs, so check the park's calendar before you go.
Wynwood Walls. The murals on the public streets around Wynwood are free to walk and photograph. The gated Wynwood Walls attraction itself charges admission. Two different things with almost the same name, and guides constantly conflate them. Confirm on the official site before you plan.
County and state parks. Entrance, vehicle, activity and facility fees depend on the individual park. Check the park's own fee page rather than assuming pedestrian entry or parking is always free.
Street parking. Free beach access does not mean free parking. Metered street parking in South Beach and Coral Gables will find you.
Free with paid admission. A lot of museum programming is advertised as free when it means free once you have bought a ticket. Read the fine print.
If you want a genuinely free day trip out of the city, Big Cypress National Preserve is fee-free with no entrance pass required. Off-road vehicle permits and campgrounds cost money, but walking in and looking at the Everglades does not.
How to build a free day in Miami
Morning: choose a Miami Beach day around the Botanical Garden and a self-guided architecture walk. The free Miami Beach trolley operates within Miami Beach and connects with regional transit; do not assume it is a free ride across to the mainland.
Afternoon: choose a downtown Metromover outing or a separate visit to ICA Miami in the Design District. The Metromover serves downtown, Brickell and Omni, while ICA Miami is at 61 NE 41st Street; it does not have a Design District Metromover stop, so plan the connecting bus, walk or paid ride separately.
Evening: the beach at sunset, which is the best free thing in the city and nobody has figured out how to charge for it yet.
If you land on a second Saturday, rebuild the whole day around PAMM instead.
What to bring
Water, because Miami humidity is not a joke even in the cooler months.
Sunscreen and a hat for the walking portions.
A charged phone for the self-guided tour apps and for advance museum tickets.
A card, since much of Miami has gone cashless.
Cash or a card for the donation-based things you thought were free.
What to do when you are ready to spend a little
Free covers a good day. It does not cover a Heat game, a Fillmore show or a haunted house, and those are what people remember.
